Being Responsible Emergent Reader & Craftivity Pack
First off, I have to say the reason I picked to review this item is because it was soooo darn cute! I love that sweet little bee. Plus, as a kinder teacher, I'm always trying to help my students learn to be more responsible. I mean....what teacher doesn't try to hammer home being responsible......endless battle :0) But, being "responsible" and the term "responsibility" is such a difficult concept for little learners.
I work in a school where we really aren't allowed to do alot of crafty things. Our crafts are very limited and have to have a direct connection to our curriculum and scope and sequence. So crafts are usually out of bounds for me and my littles. But we do teach character education so this was a perfect fit! I love when craft and educational come together!
The graphics in this unit are adorable and so bright and colorful! You really can't help but fall in love! This pack comes with a colored class book and both colored and black and white emergent readers for the kiddos. I printed the colored class book, placed it in sheet protectors, and put on book rings. It makes a terrific flip book that has now gone in centers for the kids to read over and over. We also did a word wall hunt in the student emergent readers. The kids thought that was super cool!
Next, we did a whole group sort of things that demonstrate being "responsible" and things that are "not responsible". This sort was fantastic because it helped the kids understand things they should and shouldn't do ....BUT it was also terrific in that it really helped to drive home the concept of responsibility as vocabulary. So, this lesson wasn't just a character lesson - it was also a FAB vocabulary lesson too. I can tell you my 5 year olds have a much better idea of what being responsible means. They have used the term correctly often this last week - pointing out things that go on in our room that are both responsible and not responsible. I love that!!
And, finally we got to make our "Responsibility Bees". Now, seriously....are these not the cutest bees you've ever seen? I fell in love with them.......and so did my kiddos!!.....and so did everyone else in the building that saw them :0)
From the teacher perspective - it was really easy to gather the materials for the bee. There was just 3 simple sheets to copy for the bee - easy peasy lemon squeezy! This activity was also easy for kids to manipulate and cut - large figures to cut.......not too hard for even amateur cutters! :0)
Plus, again this craft isn't just a cutesy craft! Oh no!!! The head of the bee lifts up and that area is a space for the kids to do their own "responsibility sort" - like the one we did whole group .....uuuummmm can we say, "Perfect formative assessment"?
